Chinese Hummer

Wild

What a Hummer

June 3 2009

It was a bitter sweet moment for General Motors when it announced, a day after declaring bankruptcy, that it had found a Chinese buyer for its muscular Hummer brand. The undisclosed price – thought to be about $500m – is a mere speck in the financial black hole that GM has become, but the fate of the unique franchise may be instructive. While hardly a core marque, with about 0.5 per cent of the automaker’s North American sales last month, Hummer had become a symbol of ruggedness. Sadly, it never made the transition to mass-market success.

Hopes for Hummer were poor even when it went on the block almost a year ago. Demand for the vehicles was slumping, with crude oil just weeks shy of its record high and radical environmentalists having recently set fire to Hummer showrooms.

The previously unknown Chinese firm that has bought the brand, Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery, will be the subject of a few punchlines but it may have the last laugh. Far more valuable than the designs or 220 global dealerships they are buying is a brand that has benefited from advertising that money cannot buy during Operation Desert Storm.

GM, which purchased the brand in 1999, eventually chose to shrink and dilute Hummer. Like today’s Jeeps, they now hardly resemble the military Humvees that inspired them. Buyers of the hulking, discontinued H1 were willing to pay $140,000 and today’s largest model, the H2, starts at $63,000 in spite of being based on the mass-market GMC Yukon. If the new owner can once again lure buyers who seek something unique – carbon footprints and pump prices be damned – it need not sell more Hummers than GM did at its peak a few years ago.

Gas Prices Pump Up Value of Hybrid Cars

By Linda A Moore Linda A. Moore lmoore@commercialappeal.com
Source: The Commercial Appeal Memphis, TN

Arun Gandhi took possession of a new Toyota Avalon last week.

But the Avalon wasn't his first choice.

"I was hoping to get one of the hybrid cars, but they didn't have one in stock, so I took the Avalon instead," Gandhi said.

He wanted to see the Toyota Prius, the Motor Trend 2004 Car of the Year that boasts a combined gas engine and two electric motors - and an EPA fuel-economy rating of 60 miles per gallon in the city and 51 mpg on the highway.

Gandhi, 70, founder and director of the M. K. Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence at Christian Brothers University, traded a 1997 Camry and averages about 10,000 miles a year.

Still, with rising gas prices, fuel economy is an issue.

"If I was doing a lot of driving around, I would certainly go for less consumption," he said.

Gandhi isn't alone.

Rising prices have car buyers giving gas-mileage estimates closer scrutiny, and Toyota's new Prius is getting a lot of attention, said Kevin Barksdale, general manager at Chuck Hutton Toyota. The cars are presold well in advance of delivery, Barksdale said.

Many of the dealership's customers - not just those in the market for a Prius - have told him gas prices are now a factor in their car- buying decisions.

"It's impacting my customers," Barksdale said. "I've had people come in with a vehicle getting typical V-8 gas mileage and they're coming in looking at trading just to meet the gas prices."

Gas mileage may well be a consideration when car buying, but experts say it will be a while before prices rise enough to seriously shift consumer behavior.

"I think people here in the United States are going to go when they want to go," said Mary Lee Booth, executive director of the Tennessee Oil Marketers Association, a trade group with more than 300 company members.

Booth's thoughts aren't far off.

Guy Caruso, administrator of the Energy Information Administration, warned last week that prices were likely to be significantly higher in some regions, such as California, where gasoline has been averaging $2.12 a gallon with little sign of relief anytime soon.

But sticker shock at the pumps is not likely to keep people off the highways.

The EIA estimated that demand for gasoline this summer would average 9.32 million barrels a day, a record. Both the number of drivers and the miles they travel will continue to increase as they have year after year. Average motor vehicle fuel economy will be "virtually unchanged" from last year, the agency said.

By late last week average gas prices in Memphis were at $1.685 a gallon for regular unleaded, according to AAA, which tracks fuel prices.

That compares with a price of $1.621 a month ago and $1.544 during the same period last year.

Even now, folks aren't staying home because of fuel prices, said Dennis Monroe, AAA division manager for the Greater Memphis area.

AAA creates customized trip maps, called Trip Tiks, for its members, and even though no official studies have been conducted, there has been no decline in Trip Tik requests.

"What we are seeing is a large demand for these Trip Tiks," Monroe said. We have seen it here at our branch. My estimate is, yes we're going to see the normal holiday density of traffic."

People can save gas in other ways, he said, by driving more slowly, keeping the correct air pressure in their tires, air filters changed and engines properly tuned.

Booth believes the rise and fall of gas prices no longer surprises consumers.

"Everybody's used to prices going up and down," Booth said. "I think people have gotten used to the volatility of gas."

Ya think? Automakers Are Steering Their Products Into More TV Shows, Films

Why not spend the money improving cars instead of wasting it on this stupid adverstising?

Automakers Are Steering Their Products Into More TV Shows, Films

By Julie Hinds
Source: Detroit Free Press

Cars are stars, as everyone in Detroit already knows.

But when it comes to product placement in television and movies, automobiles are playing a bigger role than ever before.

On a recent episode of ABC's "Alias," a chase scene practically screeched to a halt as the camera zoomed in on a Ford F150 logo.

On NBC's "The Apprentice," a Chrysler vehicle will play a role in one of the final tasks assigned to the show's contestants.

It's all about weaving products into entertainment in ways other than traditional commercials.

Sometimes, it's even about making your car a lead character.

General Motors is teaming up with USA Network on a TV movie inspired by the Pontiac GTO. "The Last Ride" will star Dennis Hopper, Fred Ward and Chris Carmack of Fox's "The O.C." - plus a vintage 1960s GTO and the newly revived 2004 model.

The project was the idea of Rob Cohen, who used a 1967 GTO in his 2002 film, "XXX," and recently filmed three TV ads for the reintroduction of the famed muscle car. The story is about three generations of a family connected by the GTO.

Filming is supposed to begin this month. The tentative air date is early June.

What makes "The Last Ride" so unusual, according to GM, is that the car was cast before the script was even written.

"We're usually brought in on something like this in the 11th hour," says Dino Bernacchi, Pontiac's advertising manager. "We're never, ever brought in in this phase of a concept."

Kevin McAuliffe, senior vice president of integrated brand entertainment for Universal Television Networks (which includes USA Network), says the creative aspects of the film blend neatly with the marketing angle.

"The content really is story-driven, with the car being the fourth character," McAuliffe says.

But some TV watchers have reservations about taking product placement to this level.

"It makes sense that people who make movies are going to have brand names in them," says Robert Thompson, professor of television and popular culture at Syracuse University. "But the thing that makes it disturbing is people are beginning to conceive of filmmaking as advertising from the get-go."

Says Thompson, "This is essentially a fancy 60-second Super Bowl ad reconceived as a TV movie."

Marketing analysts say automakers are becoming more aggressive in their efforts at product placement, or the newer term, product integration.

It's a strategy that's seen as essential. In an age of 500 cable channels and TiVo, viewers are increasingly skipping commercials. Companies of all kinds are looking for different ways to get their brands noticed.

"The spot advertisement's long-term prospect is pretty grim," says Thompson. "Product placement seems to be the only viable model waiting in the wings to replace it."

In the future, product placement may become part of an interactive viewing experience.

One day, you might be able to pause the action on your digital TV and click on a car, soda or detergent in the frame to find out details like price and store locations, says Jay May, president of Feature This!, a Los Angeles-based product placement agency.

"It's scary," May admits. "Since I wear two hats, the marketing hat says, `Man, that's a great idea.' But the filmmaker hat says Alfred Hitchcock would cringe if right before the knife plunges in `Psycho,' viewers could pause to see who makes the knife. It totally breaks the suspense."

For now, product placement is just becoming more noticeable, especially on shows geared toward younger viewers.

Carmakers, in particular, are making some highly visible partnerships with TV dramas and reality shows.

Ford has linked up with "Alias," "24" and "American Idol."

The "mini-movie" ads that Ford ran before and after last year's premiere of "24" made a big impression on viewers and received kudos for being one of the most remembered auto ads of the year.

On Wednesday's episode of "American Idol," Ford unveiled its latest music video combining the show's finalists and a Ford vehicle. The "Idol" wanna-bes sang together in a Ford Escape.

"We're really working very hard to break through the clutter," says Jon Harmon, Ford public affairs manager. "You need to be creative to do that."

Chrysler's role as the automotive sponsor of "The Apprentice" involves commercials, a Web contest, and the use of a vehicle in one of the show's final contests.

Jeff Bell, vice president of Chrysler, attributes a steady growth in sales of the Chrysler Crossfire to "The Apprentice" factor. Ads for the Crossfire appear regularly during the show's opening.

"Our sales are going well because of it, I think," he says.

According to Bell, the marriage of a product to the right TV show can send an important message.

"It strengthens and reinforces a brand's image and identity," Bell says. He describes the competitive, can-do spirit of "The Apprentice" as a natural fit for Chrysler.

But for all of its new twists, product placement is really as old as Hollywood itself. As Jay May points out, early silent Western films used stagecoaches with Wells Fargo's name printed on them.

Cars have been given starring roles for decades, whether it's in movies like "The Love Bug" or TV shows like "Starsky and Hutch" and "The Knight Rider."

GM's venture on "The Last Ride" fits into that tradition.

Steve Tihanyi, general director of GM marketing alliances and promotions, says the company wants to do more projects of this magnitude. "In Hollywood we're trying to send a message that GM wants to work in a little different way from everybody else."

The message from the Big Three is clear. The cars are ready for their close-ups.

Talk about getting caught int the rain

Biggest raindrops ever recorded found

University of Washington researchers have discovered the
largest raindrops ever recorded -- about one-fourth the
diameter of a golf ball in size. The researchers, flying
through cloud formations, measured raindrops as wide as 1
centimeter -- or four-tenths of an inch -- in cumulus congestus
clouds caused by burning Amazon rainforest in Brazil in 1995,
and in cumulus clouds in clean air over the Marshall Islands
in the Pacific Ocean in 1999. As raindrops fall toward Earth,
they are not tear-drop shaped but more shaped like parachutes
of thin films of water with water-heavy rims, said researcher
Peter Hobbs, whose team confirmed the findings. Large drops
break up into smaller ones when air forces through the thin
film, or when drops collide with one another, which usually
is what happens in clouds. In laboratory conditions, breakup
usually happens when drops reach about one-fifth of an inch
in diameter, researchers said. They said the drops above the
Amazon could have formed around ash particles and those above
the Marshall Islands might have formed around sea-salt
particles.

Pattie wanted the camp to be "George Jetson meets NASCAR,"
and designers pretty much nailed that theme.

Adam's crewmen officially open Camp
By Lee Montgomery, Turner Sports Interactive
(nascar.com)

N.C. Governor: 'Adam would be extremely proud'

RANDLEMAN, N.C. -- Finally, four years and $23 million
later, the Victory Junction Gang Camp was ready to open.

All the dignitaries were here, from North Carolina Gov.
Mike Easley to NASCAR president Mike Helton to singer Sara
Evans to four-time champion Jeff Gordon to actor Paul Newman.

The Petty family, of course, was center stage, from Richard
and Lynda Petty to Kyle and Pattie Petty and Austin and
Montgomery Lee Petty - Adam's siblings.

The camp was on display, from its brightly colored buildings
to its HorsePower Garage to the racecar-shaped Adam's
Race Shop.

All that was left was to cut the ribbon. The founding
members gathered around a special show car with 8-year-old
camper Haleigh Epperson. Kyle Petty grabbed the microphone
and addressed the crowd gathered inside the Race Track.

But the ribbon-cutting wouldn't be done by Kyle or Pattie
Petty, the driving forces behind the camp. Nor would
it be done by anyone with NASCAR. Or Newman. Or a
prospective camper.

No, after a lengthy discussion, Petty decided there could
be only one group of people to have that honor. Petty
held back tears as he then called up "all the guys who
worked for Adam on his Busch team when he was racing
at New Hampshire" on that fateful day in 2000 when Adam
Petty lost his life.

Slowly, crew members walked to the car. The crowd applauded
earnestly, and more than a few tears were shed. Petty
handed the scissors to Stephen Patseavouras, whom Petty
hired to look after Adam and his team.

Finally, the camp was open.

"We want you to take a little of Adam's smile with you,"
Kyle Petty said. "We want you all to be a part of
Adam's team."

Campers will start arriving here Sunday, as the first group
of 125 kids with chronic illnesses or life-threatening
diseases get to go to camp. The idea is simple: let all
kids go to camp, no matter what.

After Adam died, Kyle and Pattie came up with the Victory
Junction idea, but that was only the start. Millions of
dollars needed to be raised, and people needed to get
involved. The first driver to step up was Bobby Labonte,
and the second was Dale Jarrett, Petty said.

Later, several NASCAR drivers got involved, and both Pettys
made a special effort to thank Tony Stewart, whose
foundation pledged $1 million to the camp last year.

NASCAR itself also got involved, as did several corporations.
On Tuesday, the invitation-only grand opening honored all
the people and businesses who helped build the camp and
fund its operation.

There was one building, however, that's not quite done.
Adam's Race Shop, shaped like Adam's No. 45 car, is an
interactive building that will teach campers about NASCAR
through hands-on exhibits - including a race simulator.

Austin and Montgomery Lee Petty will help finish sponsorship
of the shop with a golf tournament at Pinehurst No. 2, the
two announced Tuesday night. And that announcement was
the most poignant of them all.

Montgomery Lee, the Petty's 18-year-old daughter, began to
cry when talking about the shop.

"I know how important it was for Adam to have the best race
shop," Montgomery Lee said. "Now he has the best."

Noting the rain drops falling on the camp, Montgomery Lee
said they were Adam's tears falling from heaven because
"he wishes he was here."

The rain also caused Kyle Petty to joke about his long
hair, saying he was going to quickly go through his
speech about the camp "because I don't know about y'all,
but this weather is killing my hair."

The rain later stopped, allowing a full view of the
75-acre campground, built on land donated by Richard
and Lynda Petty.

There's the Goody's Body Shop (hospital), the Fuel Stop
(dining hall), a gymnasium, a Fab Shop (a beauty shop where
you go to "get fabulous," Pattie said), an arts and crafts
building, a boathouse, a dock and fishing pavilion, a Soap
Box Racer (laundry hall), an Aquatic Center, housing for
campers and staff and other buildings.

Pattie wanted the camp to be "George Jetson meets NASCAR,"
and designers pretty much nailed that theme.

Victory Junction has designated eight disease-specific
week-long sessions, with kids with hemophilia and juvenile
rheumatoid arthritis in the first group.

The camp will be ready to accept them with open arms ...
fresh paint ... and plenty of smiles.

"Adam would be extremely proud," Gov. Easley said.

Magellan Concept MAZDA TYPE car...!

The concept car, named after the Portuguese navigator Magellan, has a W8 engine with a power output of 202 kW / 275 bhp. It has four-wheel drive and pneumatic suspension with active hydraulic shock absorption. These technical features call to mind an off-road vehicle, but that is only part of the picture. This study unites several worlds. Whereas the two previous concept cars could be clearly attributed to a particular segment, this compartmentalisation has been deliberately avoided with the "Patagonia Green" Magellan.

The buzzword today is "crossover". This refers to automobile concepts which unite select features of several segments in one vehicle. The team at the Volkswagen Design-Center Europe in Sitges near Barcelona has brought together the emotional appeal of modern SUVs (sport utility vehicles), the versatility of MPVs (multi purpose vehicles) and the agility of an estate car. They thus created a new species, one that melds the emotional with the rational - travel adventure with economic, intelligent space-saving design.

The length (4,685 mm) and width (1,860 mm) of the Magellan are that of an SUV. Its height (1,620 mm) defines a new type - the concept car is lower than an SUV or an MPV, but higher than an estate car.

The Magellan reflects the wishes of drivers who can not find the ideal vehicle for their complex needs in the classical SUV, MPV and estate car segments, but who appreciate the core characteristics of these vehicle types. These characteristics include high seat position, off-road capability, spaciousness in both the passenger compartment and the luggage compartment, and agile handling. Another essential element is individuality, expressed in an intelligent technical concept and design far away from the mainstream.

The design of the Magellan body has the solid look of an off-road vehicle, the spacious clear lines of an MPV and the dynamic appeal of an estate car. The progressive character of the Magellan was created without the use of obtrusive design elements. However, one design feature is the position of the VW emblem. It has been set in the bonnet, above a newly designed grille, a departure from the traditional position.

Its off-road qualities are demonstrated by emphatic wheel arches, 19-inch six-spoke wheels with 245 Michelin tyres (the PAX system with emergency running mode means a spare wheel is not required), good ground clearance, short overhangs and a relatively long bonnet. Estate car features are harmoniously integrated, underlining the crossover principle. These features include a steeply raked windscreen and, in contrast to SUVs, a low silhouette in the style of sporty estate cars. The MPV aspects are expressed in the car's width and height, its clarity and interior design.

The spaciousness and seating arrangements take their lead from an MPV smaller than the Microbus. The interior is dominated by high-quality, robust materials (Alcantara, leather, aluminium), an unwonted lightness of shapes and seemingly suspended details. In the interior, "Sensitiv" leather is combined with matte polished leather. The colours: the light green of "Green Tender" and the darker green "Trinidad".

The instruments and controls are not part of a classical cockpit, but are suspended in a horizontal information and control bar between the dash panel base and hood. Another nice touch: the Magellan has a navigation system, the "GPS to Go" system which can be removed for off-road route guidance.

Innovative features are also to be found in the seats. The Magellan has three rows of seats for a total of six people. The front and middle rows have individual seats, whereas the third row has a bench seat. A monorail frame underneath the seat and the lengthways guide rail integrated in the wooden floor allows best-possible use of the available space. It also creates the impression that the seats "float" in the same way as the instrument panel. The third row of seats can be stored in the floor when not in use.

Drivers who like to be at home everywhere can hitch up a specially designed caravan to the . Perhaps unsurprisingly, the caravan design is matched to the car. Surprisingly, it can be extended by two metres. Many journeys are made to the sea. The study also has a good idea here: a roof box which can be turned over and used as a boat. Arrive, unpack, and get started.

NASCAR responded Wednesday by docking him 25 championship points, fining him $10,000 and putting him on probation until June 1.

AFFF bilge cleaning

Short Navy Story from the archives dirt cheap rims

There are three ways of doing any job , the right way, the wrong
way, and the Navy way. The only difference between the last two is
the Navy way is accepted and you won't get in trouble for doing it
that way. case in point painting the bilges. A bilge is a holding
area for leakage in engineering spaces. Imagine a room the size of
your house with all kinds of machinery that is cooled by oil and
salt water. Take all of the floors out and put in grates and all the
leaks drip into your basement where you have several different ways
of pumping them out. Add all kinds of little pedestals for machinery
to sit on called foundations and miles of piping and valves and you
have a bilge. Navy likes the bilges painted terra cotta red because
the Navy paints everything that doesn't move and salt water makes
steel rust.

The right way to do this is to completely clean the bilge,
sandblast loose paint and rust, prime with a suitable primer, and
apply a finish coat. This takes months to do and involves shipyards
and dry-docks.

The Navy way is a few days before an inspection, you clean the
bilges. Take a 5 gallon pail of AFFF which is the stuff they foam
down runways with and fight oil fires, and dump it in the bilges.
take three or four fire hoses and stir it up good till it looks you
put a whole box of Tide in mom's washer and then pump it overboard
while you agitate and rinse with the fire hoses. Your bilge is now
clean except for nuts, bolts, wrenches, hammers, and Zippo lighters
that people have dropped. Now you fill the bilges back up with salt
water again to just below the gratings and empty about 150 gallons
of oil based terra cotta paint into the water and start to slowly
pump the water out until the bilge is dry and the paint coats
everything on the way down. Keep your bilges dry for the next 8
hours and everything is pretty for the inspection. Of course half of
it will blister and peel in the next few months but then we can do
it all over again the next times we get visitors.

The wrong way is the same as above if the chief bosun or your
inspectors catch you which is fairly easy as the first step for
preparation involves cleaning and you have a whole toolbox worth of
tools embedded in paint at the bottom of the bilge.

The first chief I worked for onboard ship was tired of spending a 1000 dollars a quarter for new tools and had went to serv-mart and bought all new tools just prior to the ship getting underway for Westpac.

He initiated a new check out procedure and assigned a man to the tool
cage to hand out and check-in tools each workday. First day of the
program someone lost a 1/2 in drive ratchet working in the bilges
and the chief was upset. He told the man not to come out of the
bilges till he found the ratchet. The chief had a couple of rubber mallets
and every time the man stuck his head up above the deck plates he would
throw one at him. The ratchet hadn't been misplaced though, it had
been stolen and eventually the thief started feeling sorry for the
guy in the bilges and returned the ratchet without revealing himself.

They had very few problems with lost tools after that.

A spotter's job not that difficult at Bristol

With 43 drivers circling the relatively tight oval at Bristol at speeds well over 120 miles per hour, one would think the spotter's job is nearly impossible.

Roman Pemberton, who stands above the track and helps Joe Nemechek negotiate traffic, said it's not as bad as it might seem.

"The biggest misconception is that Bristol is the hardest place to spot," said Pemberton, who has spotted for 32 drivers in the last 15 years. "From my tandpoint, Bristol is not the most difficult to spot because everyone is running at the same speed, which makes it a lot easier to follow the problems when a car is out of control."

Pemberton said things actually seem to happen more slowly at Bristol than at other places.

"When you see a hole for your driver to get into at Bristol, you're confident there will be enough space," he said. "Gaps don't close up quickly there like they do at other tracks like Rockingham and Darlington."
